Decided today to make an effort to be nicer to folks driving around during the holidays. People are stressed and often need to make dumb moves just to keep peace with the folks/kids/etc. in the car. So I'm going to try to let them in easily as much as possible.

Except Prius drivers. NEVER yield to a cheese wedge! They lack the ability to appreciate kindness. As if it's owed to them because they are single-handedly saving the planet! Pridiots! A Pox on them!

Sorry but there IS a HUGE environmental footprint from their pallet of lithium batteries, despite their insistence that they are so so green.
Well, today finds mom a little better physically. Seems the PT yesterday did some good in loosening her legs/knees up a bit.

Conversationally she was pretty good, not disoriented like a few days ago.

She ate 1/3 to 1/2 of her Osso Buco and baked potato and nearly 1/2 of her artichoke. Progress.

Today mom was pretty tired but the physical therapist Tony came by came by and worked with her.

Despite her initial reluctance she agreed to work a little. Got up and stood with the walker twice over 30 minutes. Since PT doesn't work on the weekends it was important to get a little weight bearing exercise in.

After 30 min she was pretty tired and laid down to take a nap.

Physical therapy will call me on Monday in advance of her sessions so that I can come by. Basically I won't/can't take no for an answer. Only way out is to eat and exercise.

Good news is that she seemed pretty alert and conversational if a bit crabby!

Just call me bad cop bad cop.

Well she MUST be feeling better or found her best pair of Cranky Pants!

The CRABBY factor has gone up by a factor of 5 at least.

She ate maybe half of her dinner tonight. (Prime rib and Scalloped potatoes with pineapple and tomato aspic salad)!!

Have I mentioned how delightful being an only child is?

I think I'll eat lunch now!  8:11 P.M.
Mom returned to the SNF around 5 last night and had some soup for dinner. She seemed more lucid than the day before but was still a little confused. The diagnosis was UTI and is being treated with antibiotics. That explains the pain in the lower abdomen. Battery of tests run and all came back normal other than the infection. 11:20 a.m.

Sf Towers says she should be returning to her room in an hour or so. 3:15 P.M.

Update for Tuesday

Mom readmitted to ER CPMC this a.m. complaining of abdominal pain. Just spoke to ER doc at CPMC and xray shows no obstruction. Tentatively plans to send her back to SF Towers. They ran a full battery of tests and other than "constipation" can't find any other issues. Possible slight URI . Going to advise stronger stool softener regimen. 1:30 P.M.

She's in the SNF now and resting. Arrived 4:30 about.
Rm G1 Second floor
Mom going to be transferred to SNF 4 p.m. today Room/Bed G1

Thursday November 14 2013

Mom resting now. Nurse says much more communicative today. Pain medication cut in half seemed to be much better. Mom talking back to nurses (a good sign)

No results from MRI or Xray done yesterday early evening. No new plans from doctors as of yet.

She ate some breakfast this morning, about 20%

Just waiting for an update now.

Update 12:00 noon Thursday;

Results from MRI back, apparently a stress fracture of the pelvis from one or more of the last three or so falls is the cause of the discomfort.

Probably transfer to the SNF sometime today.

One article regarding the efficacy or lack of the "hospitalist" position in many hospitals.

Wednesday November 13 2013

Mom was scheduled to be transferred from St F hosp to SNF today at 10, 9:30, 2:30, 4:30, and then the docs scratched that idea at 2 something when she was pretty out of it from pain medication.

Plan is to observe overnight and re assess in the a.m. Oxygen levels are fine and she's really resting!

Pain from hip area is still severe and probably going to do MRI today/tonight to see if anything untoward is going on.

Received two cortisone shots, one in each knee and didn't even flinch.

Update for Tuesday November 12 2013

Mom recovering from pneumonia contracted post hip operation.

Great doctor Yu at St. F caught it early and aggressively pushed heavy antibiotics which appear to have worked well.

Today's plan is to move her to a close-by SNF to continue physical therapy and recovery.

Off the IV's now and taking pain meds orally.

Pneumonia set her recovery back significantly (at least 10 days) while she recovered from that.

By and large the "hospitalist" position is a joke. While some may actually be thoughtful, competent, caring doctors, my experience is that many are complete hacks OR so new/young as to be useless.

Time will tell as re-admissions due to their substandard approach  continue to rise.

My strong advice is to stay VERY involved with your friends and family, visit often, ask questions and watch these vulturedocs like a hawk!
