REMEMBER MERVYNS ?
NOW THIS IS THE LADY the protesters need to get back if they really want to send a message!
NOT judging. I'm in the STAY at HOME STAY, SAFE CAMP but I can see how some folks in lightly impacted, sparsely populated areas as well as not heavily impacted areas might have a good argument against what they may rightly feel are draconian measures.
Densely populated areas, not so much. Leave poliDicks out and do what makes common sense.

Here is something I read (on the internet so it must be true)
This actually jives with my knowledge base as it pertains to N95 and above masks (N99, N100, P100 , R95, R100 and so on.
I think my last day at work (due to being High Risk) was 3 or 4 weeks ago. Prior to that I was by design and circumstances, the de facto expert on masks. They were in my department and I read everything I could Every DAY so as to be able to speak with some certainty.
I can recite if called upon, the difference between N, R, and P masks. As well as the differences between 95, 99, 100. I can tell you the difference between N95 masks, and "surgical masks" I can also tell you why the dust masks, bandanas, and home made masks are NOT sufficient for "Virus" mitigation.
Masks (N95 and beyond) are certified by NIOSH. NO others are certified to filter down to .3 microns. PERIOD
We carried a "surgical mask" made by Safe Life They has applied for and were granted N95 certification (primarily because of their 3 layer including active antimicrobial based on iodine)
Can they *Help*? Well that depends on several things, FIT is a big one, but that is NOT enough. To illustrate this point, imagine a mask made entirely of sticky Duct Tape.
Arguably 100 percent effective (as is super glue)
There is a measurable down side (asphyxiation comes to mind)
Here's the article
<SNIP>
added the warning a homemade mask is just 2-3% effective against stopping airborne virus particles, as woven cloth masks allow in 97% of viral particles,
"That means almost no protection for the wearer at all," wrote. "Wearing a homemade cotton mask is a false assurance, explains epidemiologist May Chu. She says it will block only about 2% of airflow."

UPDATE: The order, which Mayor London Breed announced Friday afternoon,
takes effect at 11:59 p.m. — but enforcement won't begin until 8 a.m.
Wednesday morning
As of Friday at midnight SF is ALL MASKS ALL THE TIME
Interesting Factoid
The (a) virus can remain in the air for SEVERAL HOURS
So if you are walking along by yourself you could still walk into a 'SNEEZE CLOUD" FROM SOMEONE ELSE WHO JUST PASSED BY 10 MINUTES AGO.
YIKES.

Some helpful info from CDC via Kaiser
Masks are an additional precaution, not a replacement for social distancing and hand washing.
The safest way to avoid infection and slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus is to stay home as much as possible. If you must be in public, maintain a 6-foot distance from other people. It's still important to wash your hands with soap and water.
Wear a mask to protect others.
Masks are most helpful in keeping sick people from infecting others. Because there's some risk that people who are infected with the virus don't know they have it, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends everyone use a cloth face mask if they need to go out in public. Masks may also help prevent people from touching their faces, which should be avoided with unwashed hands. You can make your own.
You can make your own mask at home that is suitable for wearing outside. It should have multiple layers of fabric and allow you to breath easily. Don't use cloth masks with children younger than 2 or anyone who has trouble breathing or is unable to remove the mask without assistance.

Greetings from occupied sheltered in place San Francisco.
WOW!
If this isn't one for the history books, a freaking panf'indemic right here right now.
Wear masks, (bandanas, scarves, duct tape)
I'm off work because cause I am of that advanced age/compromised immune system demographic that seems to be ground zero for inviting a dirt nap. (See Below)
Some mask facts that I learned prior to this aerosol conflagration.
My department was the main source for all masks prior so I read every day and tried to learn more and more.
Masks are rated (certified by) primarily by NIOSH (federal OSHA essentially)
Masks are classified N, R, or P
N NOT resistant to oily particles
R SOMEWHAT resistant to oily particles
P STRONGLY resistant to oily particles
NIOSH classifications.
Check this article out, good facts.
https://www.majorsafety.com/blogs/news/whats-the-difference-between-an-n95-and-r95-respirator
OKAY so whats all this talk of "oily" and "not oily"
Basically these ratings are devised/created for industrial workplaces but still relevant out IRL just less so. (However, see the part about how robust [hours before replacement] a P mask is compared to an N mask)
So you work in an auto repair shop where lots of fumes, gas, oil, paint, solvents are floating around. You would certainly want a P mask.
Maybe you work in a bakery, likely should choose an N mask.
On tuesday and thursday you work doing auto body and on Mon, Wed, Fri you're back at the bakery, if you can only have one mask choose an R mask
The 95, ~99, 100 come from just how good are they at sealing to your face. 95 is 95% effective, 100 is 99.9%. The difference is in how they seal to your face, the P100's have a rubber seal that the 95's do not have hence the higher rating.
BTW Duct tape has a near 100% rating but has some major downsides (although some would argue some sketch upsides as well. This guy is wearing it well. Bwa hah hah (see below)
Okay that's a lot about "disposable masks, what about reusable masks.
Two of my favs come to mind. Both are rated at N99 (though you have to really search packaging to find the official rating, maybe even their website.
#1 VOG masks
#2 RZ masks
Both have breathing valves (technically EXhalation valves.
Pricier by a substantial margin (30 to 40 vs 2 to 10) BUT reusable.
The RZ uses replaceable filters as well
WAY more stylish
