WOW!
If this isn't one for the history books, a freaking panf'indemic right here right now.
Wear masks, (bandanas, scarves, duct tape)
I'm off work because cause I am of that advanced age/compromised immune system demographic that seems to be ground zero for inviting a dirt nap. (See Below)
Some mask facts that I learned prior to this aerosol conflagration.
My department was the main source for all masks prior so I read every day and tried to learn more and more.
Masks are rated (certified by) primarily by NIOSH (federal OSHA essentially)
Masks are classified N, R, or P
N NOT resistant to oily particles
R SOMEWHAT resistant to oily particles
P STRONGLY resistant to oily particles
NIOSH classifications.
Respirator Class | Minimum Efficiency Level |
---|---|
N95, R95, P95 | 95% |
N99, R99, P99 | 99% |
N100, R100, P100 | 99.97% |
Check this article out, good facts.

OKAY so whats all this talk of "oily" and "not oily"
Basically these ratings are devised/created for industrial workplaces but still relevant out IRL just less so. (However, see the part about how robust [hours before replacement] a P mask is compared to an N mask)
So you work in an auto repair shop where lots of fumes, gas, oil, paint, solvents are floating around. You would certainly want a P mask.
Maybe you work in a bakery, likely should choose an N mask.
On tuesday and thursday you work doing auto body and on Mon, Wed, Fri you're back at the bakery, if you can only have one mask choose an R mask
The 95, ~99, 100 come from just how good are they at sealing to your face. 95 is 95% effective, 100 is 99.9%. The difference is in how they seal to your face, the P100's have a rubber seal that the 95's do not have hence the higher rating.
BTW Duct tape has a near 100% rating but has some major downsides (although some would argue some sketch upsides as well. This guy is wearing it well. Bwa hah hah (see below)
Okay that's a lot about "disposable masks, what about reusable masks.
Two of my favs come to mind. Both are rated at N99 (though you have to really search packaging to find the official rating, maybe even their website.
#1 VOG masks
#2 RZ masks
Both have breathing valves (technically EXhalation valves.
Pricier by a substantial margin (30 to 40 vs 2 to 10) BUT reusable.
The RZ uses replaceable filters as well
WAY more stylish
